Piping allows you to carry a respondent’s answer from a single-choice question into later questions. This can be useful when you want to personalise question wording using a respondent’s previous response.
Piping does not change the survey flow or available answer options. It simply inserts a respondent’s selected answer into the text of a later question.
How piping works
You can pipe answers from a single-choice question into any other question type.
When piping is applied, a placeholder is inserted into the question text. During the survey, this placeholder is replaced with the respondent’s actual answer.
To use piping:
Create a single-choice question you want to pipe an answer from.
In the question where you want to insert the answer, select the Pipe icon (
{ }) in the question card.Choose the earlier question you want to pipe from in the dropdown.
A shortcode is inserted into the question text, such as
{Q1}or{Q2}, depending on the source question.
Previewing piped questions
Use Preview at any time to check how piped answers will appear to respondents.
To see piped content correctly, start the preview from the question you are piping from. This ensures the placeholder is replaced with a response.
Limitations to be aware of
Piping is currently only available from single-choice questions.
You can pipe an answer into any question type, but you cannot pipe multiple answers from a multi-choice question.
Piping inserts text only and does not affect routing, logic, or answer availability.
