Media can be a powerful way to add context to your survey, especially when testing concepts, creative or messaging. Attest allows you to add images, video clips and audio clips to most question types, helping respondents understand what they are reacting to.
This article explains when to use media, how to add it, and what to consider for the best respondent experience.
When to use media in surveys
Media works best when it helps respondents react to something concrete rather than imagine it. Common use cases include:
Testing creative, adverts or packaging
Showing product concepts or designs
Playing audio for brand, tone or voice testing
Adding clarity where text alone may be ambiguous
Media should support the question, not distract from it. Keep files clear, relevant and easy to consume on mobile devices.
Types of media you can use
Attest supports different types of media, depending on what you want respondents to see or react to. You can use media in three main ways:
In questions, by adding images, video or audio clips to give respondents something specific to react to
In answer options, by using images as selectable answers in supported question types
In message cards, by adding images to provide context or instructions
Using images in your survey
Images can be added to any question type or text cards. Click on the media icon next to the question text and choose Image. You can upload your image by dragging and dropping a file or selecting one from your computer.
Images are shown full screen to respondents before they continue to the question, and can be expanded again if needed.
Supported image formats include PNG, JPEG, WEBP and non-animated GIFs. Images can be up to 2048 Γ 2048 pixels.
Images as answer options
You can also use images as answer options in single choice, multiple choice and grid questions.
To do this, toggle on Allow images in Answer settings, then add an image to each answer option. All image answers must include accompanying text.
You can choose between compact and large image display options:
Compact images show answers in a two-column grid and work best with square images
Large images preserve the original image format and are better for detailed visuals, such as creative concepts
To avoid excessive scrolling on mobile, a maximum of six large image answers can be added. Respondents can tap images to view them full size before selecting an answer.
Using video clips in your survey
Video clips are useful when you want respondents to react to moving visuals, such as adverts or demonstrations.
To add a video, select Add media on the question card and select Video. Paste a YouTube link to your video.
Videos can be unlisted on YouTube so they are not publicly visible. Make sure the video is set to Unlisted rather than Private, and that playback is allowed on all domains.
Video clips can be up to 3 minutes long. Respondents must watch the full clip before answering, and can replay it as many times as they like.
You can preview how the video will appear to respondents using the Preview option in the survey editor.
If you are using YouTube Shorts, paste the URL containing /shorts to ensure the video displays correctly in portrait format.
Using audio clips in your survey
Audio clips are helpful when testing sound, voice, tone or radio-style content.
To add an audio clip, select Add media on the question card and choose Audio. You can upload an MP3 file or paste a YouTube link hosting the audio.
Uploaded audio files must:
Be in MP3 format
Be under 4MB
Be less than 1 minute long
As with video, respondents must listen to the full audio clip before answering, and can replay it as needed.
Customise media for different audiences
If your survey includes multiple audiences or markets, you can customise media so different groups see different images, videos or audio clips.
After adding your first media file, you will see the option to add additional versions for other audiences. This is useful for multi-market or localised research.
