Questions with many answer options can be difficult to analyse or present clearly. Merging answers allows you to group multiple answer options into a single category, helping you focus on the patterns that matter most.
Merged answers are created from the chart edit modal and apply at the question level, meaning the grouping is reflected consistently across analysis and reporting.
When merging answers is useful
Merging answers is particularly useful when:
answer options are very granular
you want to group similar responses together
low-frequency answers make charts hard to read
you are simplifying results for reporting or stakeholders
For example, you might:
group individual TV shows into genres such as comedy or drama
Combine rating scale responses into broader categories, such as grouping Likely and Very likely to understand positive intent
This allows you to focus on meaningful groupings without changing what respondents originally saw.
How merging answers works
When you merge answers:
two or more answer options are combined into a single group
the merged group can be renamed
the grouping applies wherever the question appears
Merging does not remove or alter the underlying data. You can unmerge answers at any time.
You can merge answers on any chart, from both the results dashboard as well boards. Select Edit to open the chart edit menu. In the anser list, select Merge.
Select two or more answers that you want to combine into a single group. Once selected, you’ll be able to rename the group.
Give the merged group a clear, descriptive name that reflects why the answers belong together. This name will be used everywhere the question appears.
Save your changes. The merged group will now be shown in the chart and applied consistently across all other views of that question, including boards, crosstabs, and exports.
If you want to unmerge your answers, simply open the edit modal again, select merge and unmerge the grouped answers. The original answer options will be restored, and results will update accordingly.
Filtering and merged answers
Merged answers can be used in filtering and analysis.
When you select a merged group:
all answers within that group are included
you can still work with individual answers if needed
This makes it easier to switch between high-level and detailed views of the same data.
