Adding questions to your survey

Learn how to add, organise and edit questions while drafting surveys in Attest

Updated this week

Adding questions is at the heart of building a good survey. In Attest, you can add questions in several ways, move and duplicate them as you go, and make changes without needing to start again.

This guide covers the basics of adding and managing questions while you draft your survey.

Use Compass to help draft questions

If you are unsure how to phrase a question or want help getting started, Compass can suggest question wording and answer options based on your research goal.

Describe what you are trying to learn in plain language and Compass will generate draft questions that you can then edit, reorder or refine in the editor.

Adding questions or text cards

When you begin drafting a survey, you can choose to add a new question or choose them from your question library.

When you add a new question, you can choose from the available question types, including single choice, multiple choice, MaxDiff, ranked, grid, NPS, open text and video response. You can also add a message card or a group of questions.

Once you select a question type, you can write your question text and add answer options where relevant.

You can change the question type at any point while drafting. To do this, select Change next to the question type in the top left of the question card. Your question text and answer options will be preserved where possible.

For a detailed explanation of each question type and when to use them, see our guide to question types.

Using questions from your library

If you or your team have saved questions to your library, you can reuse them in new surveys.

Adding questions from the library helps keep wording consistent across studies and saves time when running similar research repeatedly. You can edit library questions after adding them to a survey if needed.

Add questions in bulk

If you already have questions drafted elsewhere, there are two ways to add them to Attest.

You can use Compass to paste in a brief or existing questions and ask it to turn this into a survey. This is usually the best option if your content needs refining, as Compass can improve wording, suggest clearer answer options, and flag potential bias or ambiguity as it drafts.

Alternatively, you can use the paste survey content feature to add questions exactly as written. This is useful if your survey is already well structured and you mainly want to move it into Attest.

To use paste survey content, copy your questions and answer options from another tool, such as Word, Google Docs or a spreadsheet. Paste them into the field, putting each question and each answer option on its own line, and separating questions with a blank line. A live preview shows how your questions will be added before you confirm. Once added, questions appear as individual cards in your survey draft.

Whichever method you choose, make sure to review each question and apply the correct question type, settings and logic before launching.

Move questions as you draft

You can easily change the order of questions without rewriting them.

In list view, use the question list on the left-hand side to drag and drop questions or text cards into a new position.

In map view, you can drag and drop question cards directly on the canvas. This is particularly useful if your survey includes logic or routing.

Duplicate questions and text cards

Duplicating questions saves time and helps avoid accidental differences in wording.

To duplicate a question or text card, open the options menu (three dots) on the card and select Duplicate. A copy will be added directly below the original.

This is especially useful when using repeated scales, such as NPS or Likert-style questions.

Character limits to be aware of

Attest surveys are designed to work well on mobile devices. Character limits help keep questions easy to read and reduce respondent fatigue.

The main limits are:

  • Questions: 200 characters

  • Answer options: 100 characters

  • External titles: 100 characters

  • Internal titles: 100 characters

  • Text cards: 800 characters

If any content exceeds these limits, the affected cards will be highlighted in red. You will need to correct these before you can purchase the survey.

If you need help writing clear, unbiased questions, Compass and the in-house Customer Research Team are available to support you while drafting.
