Getting started with Video Responses

Collect richer insight by adding video responses to your Attest survey

Updated this week

Video responses let you go beyond numbers and hear directly from your audience, using the Attest platform you already know. By asking respondents to record short videos, you can capture tone, emotion and nuance alongside your quantitative data.

Video responses are currently available to English-speaking respondents in the UK and US.

Add your company’s privacy information

Video and audio recordings are considered personally identifiable information (PII). To protect respondents and meet data protection requirements, Attest requires additional transparency for video response surveys.

Before launching your first video response project, your organisation admin will need to add the following details in Profile and settings:

  • Your company’s legal name

  • A data protection contact email address

  • A link to your privacy policy

This information is used to automatically populate consent wording shown to respondents before they take part. This ensures respondents clearly understand who is collecting their data and why, without you needing to enter this information each time.

You will not be able to launch a video response survey until these details have been added.

Create a survey with video response questions

To get started, create a new survey and add a Video response question from the question list. Adding a video response question turns your survey into a video response project.

In each project, you can include:

  • Up to 4 qualifying questions

  • Up to 4 video response questions

  • Up to 4 additional questions, such as multiple choice or open text

Questions can appear in any order, allowing you to combine video and quantitative questions naturally.

Video response questions invite respondents to record a short video answer. Alongside the main question text, you can add prompts to guide what respondents talk about. Prompts are shown before recording starts and help you get more thoughtful, detailed responses.

We recommend using up to three prompts per question. You can format prompts as a bulleted list by starting each line with a dash (-), and use basic formatting such as bold text to add emphasis where helpful.

Using other question types alongside video is encouraged. For example, multiple choice questions can capture behaviours or attitudes that you can later use to filter and analyse your video responses.

Speak to the right people

Each video response project can include up to 30 respondents. You can apply age, gender, region and household income targeting to make sure you are speaking to the right audience.

You also have up to four qualifying questions to help refine who takes part. These are useful for identifying people with relevant experience or opinions. Video responses work best when respondents feel confident talking about the topic, so aim to screen for familiarity rather than knowledge depth.

Because video projects use smaller sample sizes, it is best to keep quotas fairly broad. If quotas are too narrow, you may need to relax them once the survey is live in order to complete fieldwork.

Video response questions are only available to English speaking respondents, who are based in the UK or the US.

Purchase and launch your survey

When you purchase a video response survey, 5,000 credits are deducted from your account’s default credit balance. Once purchased, the survey goes live with our audience partner.

Collecting video responses typically takes a little longer than standard quantitative surveys. Most projects complete within a few days, depending on your targeting.

To maintain quality, Attest applies several checks:

  • Automated checks to ensure respondents are engaged

  • Automated content checks to block unsuitable submissions

  • Manual quality reviews to confirm video and audio quality

Because of these manual reviews, it is possible for some videos to be removed and for your survey to briefly reopen. We recommend waiting up to two working days after the survey closes before starting detailed analysis.

Analyse video responses

In the results dashboard, your quantitative questions appear as normal. Video response questions show a summary view, with access to a dedicated video page when you select View all.

On this page, you can:

  • Watch videos directly in the dashboard

  • View and search automated transcripts

  • Adjust playback speed or view videos full screen

  • Download videos or copy transcripts

You can also use the AI summary feature to quickly identify key themes across video responses.

Filters can be applied from the main results page to narrow videos by demographics or answers to other questions. When filters are applied, only the relevant videos will be shown.

If needed, you can export all transcripts into a single Excel file to work with the text outside of Attest.

Control access to video surveys

Because video responses contain personal data, access is restricted by default. Only the survey owner can see results initially.

You can choose to share access with your whole organisation or invite specific colleagues. This gives you control over who can view and download video and audio recordings.
